| Tony!
Toni! Tone'! |
 |
One
of the most unique R&B groups to make major waves in the 90's were six
guys from Oakland, California, named Tony! Toni! Tone'! Interestingly, none
of the six were actually named "Tony!" Consisting of Dwayne and
Raphael Wiggins, Timothy Christian, Elijah "Jovan" Baker, Antron
"Ice Cream" Haile and Carl "Rev" Wheeler, "3T"
as they were commonly known by, brought a one-of-a-kind, funked-up soul
groove to the world, that has yet to be duplicated.
3T introduced themselves to the scene with their debut album, Who?,
released in 1988. Featuring the smash Little Walter, which went #1
on the R&B charts, |
|
Who?
was also chock full of great Slow Jams, including Pain, Not
Gonna Cry For You and the slowjams.com favorite, 261.5--a song
about falling in love with a girl not of age (261.5, referencing the penal
code for sex with a minor...ouch!)
Perhaps the Tonies' biggest success came with their sophomore album, The
Revival, in 1990, which produced the monster hit, Feels Good--one
of the funkiest, jazziest, feel-good songs ever!
Along side Feels Good were other head bobbers, including The
Blues and The Oakland Stroke, but what really made The
Revival such a gold mine, was its quantity of quality Slow Jams. It
Never Rains (In Southern California) is (in my book) one of the Top
10 Slow Jams of All Time! The video that accompanied the song was unbelievable,
and just when you thought it couldn't get any better, the group released
remixes to the song, including one with Raphael rapping the entire scenario.
Whatever You Want was also one of the hottest Slow Jams ever, Sky's
The Limit, and All My Love were also great love grooves. Along
with the great music, 3T's wardrobe and style were indescribably "funky-fresh,"
flashing bright colors like lime-green and orange on outrageous suits,
complimented by crazy hats and glasses! The fellas had done a great job
branding themselves, and had made an amazing contribution to R&B as
a new decade was kicked off.
3T's long-awaited third project was released three years later, in 1993.
Its biggest asset was the super-Slow Jam, Anniversary, but the
charts would argue the up-tempo If I Had No Loot was the album's
bread-winner, as it did the most damage at both Pop and Urban radio. Unfortunately,
when it came to Slow Jams in The House, the pickins were slim:
just two. Slow Wine was average, but (Lay Your Head On My) Pillow
was truly a gem, as the group intertwined the smooth ballad's harmonies
with a country guitar twang, producing another one-of-a-kind sound that
could've only been crafted by these boys from The Bay. 1993 was successful
for 3T, as they also toured with Janet Jackson that year as well.
In 1995 Rapheal, (who changed his last name to the Muslim "Saadiq"),
contributed to the Higher Learning soundtrack with the Top 20 hit, Ask
Of You.
By the time the Tonies' forth album was released in 1996 called House
Of Music, in my opinion, the group had strayed from their original
crazy-funky-outrageous stylings, to look and sound like any other average
R&B group. Thinking of You was probably the CD's best track,
and the group had notable success with Let's Get Down, featuring
DJ Quik, but overall the project was a big dissapointment to me and a
lot of Tony fans that I talked to. There just wasn't anything "amazing"
on this CD, and it lacked the super-Slow Jams of Tony! Toni! Tone'! past.
A Greatest Hits album was packaged in 1997 featuring the best of
3T, before the group split. Dwayne Wiggins went solo, releasing Eyes
Never Lie on Motown Records, as Raphael teamed up with DJ Ali Shaheed
Muhammad (formerly from the rap group A Tribe Called Quest) and Dawn Robinson
(of En Vogue fame) to form the R&B "supergroup" Lucy Pearl.
Later Raphael also went solo, giving fans two albums: Instant Vintage
in 2002 and Ray-Ray in '04.
In 2003, most of Tony! Toni! Tone'! were invited as guests on Alicia Keys'
masterpiece, The Diary of Alicia Keys, resulting in the smash Diary,
giving the group their first Top 10 hit in eleven years!
In 2005 the group toured with R Dub! for that year's Sunday Nite Slow
Jams LIVE concert series, performing with Jagged Edge, Avant, Jon
B, Troop and more! Later that year, Dwayne Wiggins became the band leader
for the Weekends at the D.L. TV show, hosted by comedian D. L.
Hughley, on the Comedy Central cable network.
