Brasil - January 2009 trip

Monday, January 19th 2009
The adventure stared when I was called into my GM's office at 5:15PM and told that the company no longer would be needing my services.  Nothing personal--I was one of 1,900 employees laid off that week at Clear Channel Radio.  I enjoyed my 11 years with the company and savored the last two in L.A., but had been dreaming of moving to Brasil and working on Slow Jams for some time now (see the FULL BRASIL STORY HERE).  I wanted Brasil so bad, part of me was really hoping to be let go.  I'm not saying this to make myself feel better--ask any of my close friends, and they will tell you I've been feeling this way for some time.

Anyway, my flight to Rio happened to be that night--and as I was sad to be no longer working with such an amazing group of people at an incredible radio station, I was ready for Brasil.

Here I am, still kickin' it in L.A.  The Sunday Nite Slow Jams LIVE concert series was a BLAST!!!  I probably had the most fun at that one over all the others--it was so nice to be back home...my home, Tucson A-Z!  Add to the fact that my dream of having Al B. Sure! on the show was finally fullfilled.  It was so much fun.  Don't get me started about the after party.  Let's just say I nearly missed my flight back home to L.A!

Going back to the Al B. Sure! tip--did you know we work together now?  I hired him as the mid-day DJ here at the radio station, Hot 92.3 in L.A.  It is crazy not only meeting your musical idol, but actually getting to work with him on a daily basis.  Actually getting to know Al as a person now, I can tell you, he is one of the most down to earth, kindest, coolest people to know.  I'm actually getting ready to leave the office now to roll with Al for a live taping of Rock The Cradle on MTV, where his son, Lil' B. Sure! is set to perform (you might remember Lil' B. Sure! from this year's Slow Jams concert!)  Wish 'em luck. I'm out.

Happy New Year!  Just checkin' in real quick to let you know that the 9th Annual Sunday Nite Slow Jams LIVE is goin' down February 23rd and 24th in Phoenix, AZ and Tucson, AZ.  Details on the way.  Gonna be another big show!  To see pictures of past shows, click HERE.  Out!

Almost 2008--and before the year ends, I have BIG news!  We just re-launched the slowjams.com live stream...and this time, it's FREE!  Yes, absolutely, 100% free to listen to.  What's even cooler is--if you're in Southern California, you can hear slowjams.com on the RADIO, at 92.3FM Digital Channel 2.  You must have a new HD Radio to get slowjams.com, but if you don't have one, you can get one HERE.  Think about it--how cool would it be to get a 24 hour Slow Jams station on the radio--in the home, office, the CAR???

Anyway...please click HERE now to listen to the slowjams.com 24 hour Slow Jams stream.  I think you'll really like it!

In other news, I had another nice Brasil trip this month, and contruction of my Sunday Nite Slow Jams studio is almost finished there.  Click HERE to see my Brasil pics!

Happy New Year, and here's to great Slow Jams in 2008!

Boy I guess I really suck at blogging...it's been over a YEAR since I last updated this.  I guess I don't really love talking about myself.  But if you're gonna have a blog, you should "blog" once in a while, que no?

Since we last spoke here my life has changed DRASTICALLY.  I changed from "the guy who swore he would neva eva eva eva eva leave his hometown of Tucson, Arizona," to this crazy mo-fo that decided to move to Brasil.  Seriously.  I quit my job and everything.  I got a visa to live in Brasil, got my place out there, walked into the radio station January 4th and handed in my resignation.  If you wanna hear the whole story (very long), just click HERE, I explain the whole thing from beginning til end.

Today I am in L.A.  (read the Brasil story and you'll find out why)  Things are good.  I love my job at Hot 92.3.  I miss Tucson sometimes.  Mostly my family, friends, Tucson listeners (the best!), and of course the BOMB-ASS Mexican food in Tucson...sooooo good--L.A.'s got NOTHIN' on Tucson Mexican food.  But things are good.  Life is good.  Slow Jams continue.  Thanks for checking up on me.

I am officially obsessed with Brasil.  I started my Portugues class again at the college.  Portugues 101--I'm retaking it.  Can't wait for my trip to Brasil in December.  Eu adoro Brasil muito!  Eu gosto de seu comida, sua musica, suas mulheres...tudos!  Eu quero morar e trabalhar no brasil.  Talvez em 2007.

I love traveling...been traveling a LOT lately!  I can't wait until next weekend, I'm gonna see my boy Kid Visious, who runs Wild 96.1 in Odessa, Texas (one of my Slow Jam stations).  He's one of my best friends, and we're gonna tear it up.  I'm also looking forward to meeting Midland/Odessa listeners that weekend.  I'll be at Summer Jam Friday, then La Playa the next night.  Should be fun.  You can click HERE and see photos of me and some of my favorite listeners!

It was a nice Easter with the folks yesterday!  Good food, and Easter candy.  I love those Cadbury Eggs, but I seriously gotta stop--I'm getting fat (trust me, I am!)

I want you to check out Kevin "Slow Jammin'" James' new show, on the weekend: It's The Weekend Slow Jam, and it's on Saturday nights from 7PM-12 Midnight PST, on slowjams.com  It's Slow Jams "Kevin-Style," as he makes his special blend of love songs, the way only he can.  All the rare classics and B-sides from back in the day, plus your special requests.  You can learn more about the show HERE and even make a request for this Saturday's show!  Make sure to check it out this Saturday night on slowjams.com and show Kevin some love!

Just got back from a week long road trip though New Mexico and Texas.  I drove 3400 MILES this week...3400 MILES!!!  Wow!  I went ALL OVER Texas--Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Odessa/Midland, El Paso, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo, Kileen/Temple, Waco.  Not to mention, Albuquerque and Las Cruces, New Mexico!

Why?  I visited radio stations to try and get Sunday Nite Slow Jams on the air in more cities.  I also visited five of my affiliates (stations already airing the show).  It was a successful trip!  I signed up two stations (Wichita Falls and Midland/Odessa), and a couple other cities are looking good.

My favorite parts of the trip were meeting all the cool people at the radio stations, and going through some of the tiny Texas towns in between the stops.  I also gained about 10 pounds, eatin' all that good ol' Texas cookin'!

You can see a bunch of photos of the trip HERE.

The 7th Annual Sunday Nite Slow Jams LIVE was amazing!  For those of you who don't live in Arizona, we do a HUGE Slow Jams concert every year around Valentine's Day.  We've brought some great artists to the stage, including K-Ci & JoJo, Jagged Edge, Surface, Tony! Toni! Tone'!, Nu Flavor, Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, 112, Tyrese, Amanda Perez, Immature, Avant, Jon B, Mario, Changing Faces, Next, Silk, Rome, Troop, and many many more.  This year's line-up was Keith Sweat, Ginuwine, Shai, Ne-Yo, Ray J, Shai, Marcos Hernandez, and M.C. Magic.  It was an amazing show, and as always, my favorite part was getting to interview all the guys backstage.  Keith Sweat was my favorite of them all--one of my all-time favorite Slow Jam artists...but Shai were definitely the coolest guys to hang with.  They were great.  The show was incredible.  The after party was off the hook.  We'll do it again next year!

I went to L.A. last week on "Slow Jam" business.  It was a fun trip.  One of the highlights was stoppin' by Kevin "Slow Jammin'" James' place and taking his dogs for a walk.  Seriously--not only does he have two bad-ass dogs, that just about everybody who sees them comments on them, but KSJJ lives just four blocks from the Santa Monica pier, so it was a cool journey.  Kevin's one of the coolest people you'll ever meet!  As for the "business" part of the trip, hopefully L.A. will have a home for "Slow Jams" soon...keep your fingers crossed!

Saturday January 7th 2006
So if you didn't already know, but lifetime goal is to provide great Slow Jams to the world!  I'm up to about 40 radio stations that carry my Sunday Nite Slow Jams program so far.  I want 1,000!  Seriously, I won't stop until every radio station in the world is Slow Jammin' on Sunday nights!  Anyway, I'll get to the point here.  I'm really happy because this week a station in Denver signed up for the show.  I have been working KS 107-5 for YEARS, and they finally took the show.  Denver's a great city and KS 107-5 is a great station!  Props to Cat Collins and John E. Kage for making this happen...this is big!

Tuesday January 3rd 2006
Happy New Year!  I brought in the New Year at the Tucson Convention Center with 112 live in concert.  They always put on a good show, and the after party was off the hook!  I left right after I counted down the New Year at midnight though, and was home by 12:20AM to toast with my girl.  (I think I was asleep by 1AM, how sad is that!  LOL!)

The next day I was on a plane to Vegas to pick up my new car that I bought (I found a great deal on-line, but the ride was in Vegas).  We had a huge buffet that night, crashed out, and then got up early the next day to pick up the ride.  It was about an eight hour drive back home to Tucson, with a stop at Popeye's Chicken in Kingman AZ, and In and Out Burger in Phoenix (Hey, I didn't say anything about any New Year's resolutions to start eating right!)

In Slow Jam news, I just launched a syndicated weeknight Slow Jams show!  Now, in addition to Sundays, I'm Slow Jammin' Monday-Thursday nights...five nights a week baby!  My first two radio stations on-board are Hot 98.3 in Tucson, Arizona, and 104.7 Kiss FM in Phoenix.  This is gonna be fun!

Wednesday December 21st 2005
Went to Vegas for the Radio Music Awards this past weekend.  I helped our morning show interview TONS of stars.  It was very cool!  Snoop, Mary J. Blige, Pretty Ricky, Trina, Pussycat Dolls...so many!  I'll be posting the pics up soon.  After the interviews though, I was a total party pooper, and went straight to my room for room service and some good TV. Can you believe that?  Am I a punk, or what?  Here I am in Vegas, and I didn't wanna party.  I don't know--I've never been a Vegas fan.  Vacation to me is a tropical beach with exotic languages.  Ahhh, yes, Brasil.  Anyway, I'm back home now, Slow Jamming.  Sh*t, Christmas is coming soon, isn't it?  Gotta go shopping!

Sunday December 10th 2005
Just got back from New York City last night.  Had a great time, had dinner with Jay-Z, rode the subway, and met some great people...but WAAAAAAY to freakin' cold.  You should see how red my nose is from blowing it all week.  The weather was miserable, and I don't know how people live there!  But either way, I had a great time, and I got home safe--that's what counts.

Unfortunately, when I was gone, our slowjams.com audio stream went down--and no one was at the house to bring it back up!  So I was helpless until I got back and could reboot the computer.  Sorry about that.  We're getting a program that will automatically turn the system back on anytime it goes down, so this won't happen again.  Thanks for your patience.

Christmas is almost here, and I have done ZERO shopping  I'll attempt to do Christmas cards today.  Peace!

Sunday December 5th 2005
Well WE DID IT!  At exactly 12 Midnight December 1st 2005, slowjams.com 24 hour Slow Jams broadcast kicked off for the world to hear.  Everyone worked so hard to get this thing on in time, and we met the deadline.  I thought we were going to have to push it back a week, but we made it!  We're now Slow Jamming live, 24 hours a day.

I didn't expect it would be so much work though!  Keeping this thing going all day every day is real work.  In fact, the first night we were on, I stayed up until 5:15 in the morning making sure things were right.  Now it's nearly 2AM; just got home from the club.  I wanted to write a few words, then it's off to bed.  I hope you are listening to the Slow Jams, and I hope you are enjoying them!

Saturday November 19th 2005
Today was one of the best days ever...I flew in all the DJs who will be working on my new 24-hour on-line Slow Jams radio station.  We met for lunch, and then went to the Slow Jams studio to talk business and plan the launch of Slow Jams Radio.  The group included CK from Hot 98.3 in Tucson, Xavier "The X-Man" from WiLD 94.9FM in San Francisco, and Kevin "Slow Jammin'" James, formerly from The Beat in L.A., and the originator of The Slow Jams show!  We had great conversation about music, wonderful food, and lots of smiles.  These guys are great, and it's an honor linking up with them!

What a great day today!  I test drove the future "Slow Jams" vehicle.  Oh yeah, I didn't tell you--I'm getting an SUV just for Slow Jams.  It's gonna have the slowjams.com logo on it, and I'll use it to travel the country, visiting cities and radio stations that air Sunday Nite Slow Jams!  I can't wait.  I'll post pics of the SUV when I get it!

Francisco (my engineer) came over tonight to work on the technical end of our new Slow Jams Radio station.  I'm trying to make the December 1st deadline, and there's still so much to do!  Just when Cisco got rollin', he informed me that I had got the wrong electronics parts...MIERDA!  So close, but so far away.  The project was halted and we enjoyed a pizza and Cokes before my 9PM Slow Jams shift on Kiss FM in Phoenix.

Wednesday November 16th 2005
I've been wanting to make some important changes on the website forever, and I finally did!  Check out the left-hand navigation bar for new categories including LIVE APPEARANCES (where I'll be hanging out), DJs (this is the DJ lineup for my Slow Jams on-line radio station coming December 1st), and BLOG (the page you're on now!).   I hope you're enjoying this site, and if you have any suggestions, let me know!

Monday November 14th 2005
Only TWO WEEKS until our launch date of December 1st, and I am STRESSING!!!  Do you know how much stuff there is to prepare? To start, I had to buy three separate computers (very expensive), and a bunch of electronic equipment, in order to stream on the web.  Then I had to label and load my ENTIRE Slow Jams library into this big computer!  That took days and days...I have THOUSANDS of songs!  Right now I'm in the process of networking all the computers together (this is tech-talk, but it means the computers have to talk to eachother in order for this whole on-line station to work!)

Tonight while I was trying to wire up the equipment, all three computers fell off their shelves and onto the floor!!!  I pulled a little too hard on a wire, and CRASH!!!  I turned around and all of the computers were on the ground!  Can you believe that?  What a dumb-ass!!!  Anyway, I think they're okay (they're still working).  I swear, it was like a scene straight outta Home Improvement!

Anyway, I just wanted you to know how hard I am working to have Slow Jams Radio on by December 1st.  I'm working day and night (and remember, I have two full-time jobs at two separate radio stations).  I barely have time to sleep.  But I do it for the love of the music...and I do it for you!
